I’m grateful for instant water that’s accessible with the twist of a tap.
We had a dream of building our own log home. Towards that dream we bought land in the country, purchased an old trailer and set up on our newly purchased Eden. We managed a stack-wall log shed, a basement, and three daughters before we got squeezed in the recession of the early 1980s. Then came the reality of raising three children through infancy without running water. Wash days were spent at the laundromat and bath nights were spent heating buckets of water hauled from the pond on the wood stove. Now, many years later I still dislike the bleak atmosphere of a laundromat, and it was a very long time before I could bear to listen to a running tap, spewing precious water freely down a drain.
Something to think about: more than one billion people, nearly one out of every seven individuals on Earth, have an insufficient supply of potable water.
Now, my grandson, on the other hand is thankful for something entirely different. When about 5 or so, at a family Thanksgiving dinner, those gathered took turns saying what they were thankful for. The usual “family”, “friends”, and “food” were heard until it came to Devan’s turn. “I am thankful for ….
“Gravity”.
In keeping with American Thanksgiving, the weekly photo challenge is: Thankful.
What a great story! I had no idea you were such a tough cookie. I think three kids and a water issue might have made me looney. 🙂

Wood was also my sole source of heat – which had some good points, while also producing some of the greater challenges … in the end it was a failed dream but one from which I learned.

Well, then it isn’t a loss. Sometimes the education is worth it, even if it doesn’t work out! 🙂

No, not a loss at all – I think it best not to think of life experiences in terms of loss or failure – if we choose, we can turn each into a win and a success.

So true. I always think of that line in the movie Hitch, where his date ends in abrupt disaster and he turns to this guy and says, “I had that going differently in my head.” LOL. Many times when things don’t work out the way I imagined, I think of Will Smith standing there delivering that line. So perfect… 🙂

And, really, would it be that great if everything worked out just how we imagine? Sometimes it would be nice … but not always 😉 I’ve learned that events can take a totally different twist I hadn’t even contemplated as an option …

LOL, no! A 100% predictable life would be boring at best! Plus, it gives us an opportunity to figure out the pinch hit…

A 100% predictable life would seem pointless I think – gotta keep engaged and thinking, right Arnel?

Absolutely! Especially as we get older, it’s more and more important to keep those synapses oiled and firing. 🙂

And by the way, as you look at these nested replies, are they not breaking the words inappropriately, without hyphens? That’s what I see on my screen. You?

No, they look perfect when I see them on my computer. I couple of hyphenated words, but in the appropriate places. Weird…

You are so right Lynne – in the west we take this precious resource for granted.

We do, and we misuse our water resources. Without runnning water a lot of tasks become so much more involved, from the laundry to the bath and the dishes, to cooking and brushing your teeth – to say nothing of the toilet.

I grew up being appreciative of gravity. And I still appreciate city water.

As my grandson said – gravity’s good because otherwise we’d be floating around. 😉
