I know a few of you have seen this shot before as I posted it last year on my photo blog but when thinking of wondrous moments, this was one for me, as I entered the vast and ornate space that is St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. As others moved past and around me, I just stood … gaping in awe. Some of the most wondrous and beautiful man-made objects I have ever seen are in Italy. This is one. Another, just off to my right as I stood beneath the dome, is Michelangelo’s Pieta, which brought me to tears …so entranced, I never even took a photo of it.

Beyond the Brush 
I would love to see this and the Pieta. That would be a dream come true.

Oh, if you are sentimental at all or beauty touches your soul, be prepared. I have actually had to good fortune to be there three times (over many decades) and each time I am struck anew.

It’s amazing to think of the work that went into the building. People actually did this.. And why don’t we have anything comparable in our country (I know, its because we are a young country, but still).

I know – we are always boggled about what they accomplished centuries ago – course, it took decades and sometimes more than a century to complete some of these incredible structures and who today, I ask you, Heidi, would wait, and work, that long on one building? Course, these stand for centuries and I don’t imagine any of our modern structures being around 500 years from now …

The cost would make it impossible now.. and even if our buildings are still standing centuries from now, there are few beautiful enough for anyone to want to visit.

Amen to that. As another example. the Pont du Gard in southern France, was built by the Romans 2000 years ago. I think it was back in the 1990s there were floods that washed out many bridges, but the Pont du Gard stood firm. We absolutely do not make things the way they used to. I hope you are enjoying the break in the weather, Heidi – family BBQ day here.
